Getting Your Driver's License

New Hampshire has a Graduated Drivers License system (GDL) for drivers under the age of 18. GDL requires young drivers to progress through a series of licensing stages that last until their 21st birthday and allow for increased driving privileges as they gain more skill and demonstrate responsible driving practices.

The first step of GDL begins when you turn 15 years 6 months of age and begin to log the 40 parental supervised driving hours required before you can take your exam. When you reach 15 years 9 months you are eligible to begin a NH licensed driver education program - also required if you wish to take your state license exam prior to age 18 . Proficient Driving Instructions All-in-One course meets State of NH requirements.

After successful completion of drivers education, you may make an appointment at a motor vehicle licensing location to take the exam. The exam consists of a vision test, computerized knowledge test, and a road test. If you pass all three, you will be issued a youth operator license which comes with restrictions designed to continue to phase in driving priviledges as you gain experience and show you are a responsible driver. The youth operator license period lasts until you reach 21 years of age.

Each step in the journey has rules governing it. We encourage students and parents to visit our resources page, follow the links to the DMV website and refer to the NH Drivers Manual for these rules.

At Proficient Driving Instruction, our policies and procedures are based on State of N.H. SAFC3100 regulations. We teach safety, driving responsibily and encourage parents or guardians to reinforce our teaching through their rules, their coaching and most of all by their example.
